MIDDLETOWN, CT – In non-conference action Friday night, the Wesleyan Cardinals women’s hockey team fell to the Endicott Gulls 5-1 in a game where the score certainly did not tell the whole story. Endicott which entered the game with nine wins and one tie was a clear favorite, but despite their scoring prowess and size advantage. Wesleyan played them very hard. Endicott put up 27 shots to Wesleyan’s 18 as both teams generated good scoring chances, Endicott arguably managed to be resourceful and benefit from some Wesleyan mistakes. The Gulls also touched off some breakaways which put a lot of a pressure on Wesleyan goalie Sam Smith. Smith made 22 saves on the night and Endicott’s Vendela Jonsson made 17.
Like the games versus Williams the week before, Wesleyan did not have the size advantage, but they continued to use their speed. Unfortunately for them, they weren’t able to keep pace with the Endicott’s scoring. Still, this game was not a blow out, it was a back and forth contest, though Endicott was able to get some really quality breaks and finish them.
Wesleyan also took 4 penalties, often attempting to stop a scoring chance, to Endicott’s 1 and that didn’t help the situation, the Cardinals did find a way to benefit from one of their penalty kills.
Endicott began the scoring early at 4:42 when the Gulls broke in. Ashlie Jones was able to get beyond the defender and shot it at Smith. The keeper made the save but it bounced to Maggie Layo who was on the other side and she flipped it in. An assist also went to Lexi Klein.
Klein again helped set up a goal at 8:57 when she moved in the offensive zone and sent a centering pass right to Lauren Ferraiuolo who didn’t hesitate in knocking it into the goal.
At 15:30 a Wesleyan miscue proved costly when a Cardinal drop pass fell instead into the hands of Jillian Gibbs right in front of the net. The defenders scrambled and stopped her but the puck slid to Jade Meier who sent it in point blank.
Wesleyan held Endicott scoreless in the second period and also notched their only goal. While down a skater Alex Horton pounced on a puck at the edge of the zone and raced up the ice, breaking in on Jonnsson and defeating her at 17:14.
The visitors attempted to slam the door on the game in the third and struck quickly at 1:05 when Meier took the puck into the Wesleyan zone from Smith’s right. She capably fed it to Gibbs who was streaking across the front of the goal and scored it.
The fifth goal was fairly unnecessary, but still with a late penalty called on Wesleyan, Ellen Carter cycled to the top of the zone and slapped it at the net, allowing Layo to deflect it past Smith. Klein also had her third assist of the night on the final goal of the game.
Horton led Wesleyan with 4 shots, Jackie Kilar had 3 (Read a great article about her that Wesleyan put out here.), Maggie Curran, Caroline Seibold, and Colleen Castro, all had 2 each.
Layo and Gibbs paced the Gulls with 4 shots, Ferraiuolo, Meier, and Michaela McNamara all had 3, and Ashlie Jones, and Dynnea Bezona had 2 each.
Seibold and Sarah Goss had 2 blocks each for Wesleyan and Miranda Nestor, Allie Damren, Gina Mangiafridda, Maddie Nash, and Alicia Nickolenko had 1 each.
For Endicott, Emma McDowell, Ferraiuolo, Carter, Samantha Fuller, Gibbs, and Nicole Demers all had 1.
Endicott is now 10-0-1 and Wesleyan is 2-4-2.

It is very possible a player has far more of any sort of play than are noticed in the heat of action. It is what it is. Read these more as a player had “at least” what is noted here. Note the language is a bit stilted, I’m trying to figure out how to make the information flow better.)
