Gymnastics: SCSU, Bridgeport, RIC at Yale

NEW HAVEN, CT- In Saturday afternoon action at Yale, the Bridgeport Purple Knights put up a 193.175, the host Yale Bulldogs had a 191.275, the Southern Connecticut Owls put up a 184.95, and Rhode Island College Anchorwomen scored a 172.800.

Kimberly Stewart of Bridgeport won Vault with a 9.75, with her teammate Kelsey Campbell having a 9.675 for second. SCSU’s Tiffany Coleman flew to a 9.575. Yale’s Rebecca Chong led her team with a 9.550. Corinne Paul’s 9.1 was tops among RIC gymnasts.

Maritza Futch also of UB, won the Uneven Bars with a 9.725. Kathleen Aberger of SCSU placed second swinging to a 9.675, and Megan Ryan of Yale had a 9.650. RIC’s best Bars score came from Allie DiBiase’s 8.925.

On the Beam, Maya Reimers of UB hit a 9.9 to win the event. Her teammate Brianna Comport scored a 9.825 for second. Yale’s Emma Firmstone tied a team record on Beam with her 9.8 and Campbell had the same score. Aberger and Rotem Porat led the Owls with 9.45s. Miranda Murphy scored a 9.125 for RIC’s top score.

Comport took floor with her 9.9. Jade Buford of Yale, Reimers, and Randi Cutolo of UB all had 9.825s. Kiarra Alleyne had a 9.75 for Yale, and Firmstone put up a 9.7. Alexandra Avendano posted a 9.65 to lead the Owls, and Erin Shea had RIC’s best score of 9.15.

Campbell narrowly won the All Around with at 38.6 as Reimers posted a 38.525. Buford had a 38.325, Murphy a 34.450 and DiBiase a 34.35.

Don Tonry Invitational is an annual meet held in honor of the late Don Tonry, a former Olympian and local Gymnastics icon. [A Yale Daily News article by Maya Sweedler summed up his career.]
