Women’s Gymnastics: SCSU Senior Day, Brown Wins

NEW HAVEN, CT- The Brown Bears proved to be undefeatable in the city of New Haven this year as they scored a 192.000 to place first ahead of the Cornell Big Red’s 191.675, host Southern Connecticut’s season high 191.025, and West Chester’s 186.425 Sunday afternoon. Brown recovered from a rough vault outing to hold on and pick up the win weeks after capturing the Ivy Championship at nearby Yale.

SCSU Senior Rebecca Brady placed first on Vault with a 9.775, Brown’s Rebecca Freedman and Cornell’s Alicia Bair and Sarah Hein all had 9.7s for the second highest score, and Madeline Martinez of Cornell had the third highest score of 9.650. Melissa Voskian of WCU led her team in scoring with a 9.6.

On the Uneven Bars, Melanie Jorgensen of Cornell was first scoring 9.875. Her teammate and Ivy Champion Lexi Schupp had a 9.775 for second, and Brown’s Julia Meyer posted a 9.75. Rachel de la Torre led all the Southern Owls with a 9.575 and Paige Griffin had her team’s top score of 9.4.

On Beam, Meyer took first anchoring her team’s rotation with a 9.825. Teammate Emily Lutfey added a 9.775, SCSU Freshman Nicole Pruchnik scored a 9.7 for third place. Kaley LaFleur topped the WCU Rams in scoring with a 9.625. Melanie Jorgensen posted a 9.5 to lead her team as Cornell had a lower scoring rotation on the apparatus known for such things.

In the showcase that was the Floor, Michelle Shnayder of Brown took first with her 9.8. Brianna Ecklof of SCSU was second scoring a 9.775. Nicole Abdo of the Bears was third thanks to a 9.75. Cornell’s Sarah Hein scored a 9.7 to top Big Red scorers. Patti Konschak’s 9.525 was first among Rams.

Southern’s Megan Cole placed first in the all around posting 38.2 for the day edging Shnayder’s 38.150 and LaFleur’s 37.550.

In a few week’s Cornell will host ECAC Division 1 Championships and Brown will be there joining the other teams in search of the title. SCSU and West Chester will be back in Connecticut at Bridgeport for ECAC Division 2s.
