WEST HAVEN, CT- Northeast 10 Conference Tournament action kicked off across the region Tuesday night including the #1 seeded Chargers of New Haven hosting #8 UMass-Lowell in a quarter final. by David F. P. [Modest Image Gallery]

FAIRFIELD, CT- Joined in progress would be the word to describe my visit to Sacred Heart as I arrived for their NEC battle with Long Island in the middle of Set 2. Kyle Robinson’s LIU Blackbirds had pulled out to a 1-0 set lead, but Rob Machan’s squad would even things up at 2 at the conclusion of the second frame.

Women’s Volleyball: Sacred Heart sweeps Quinnipiac

By David F.P. [Modest Image Gallery]

HAMDEN,CT- In a late regular season NEC match up, the Sacred Heart University Pioneers made the trip a few towns over to visit the Quinnipiac Bobcats at Kahn Court Friday Night. The result would be a 3 set win for the visitors

Set 1 opened with Sacred Heart pulling out a 17 to 3 lead, though there was good news for the Bobcats too in the set, though such a deficit put the Pioneers in a position to take the set. Offense for SHU in the set included an opening kill from Alissa Young, and another soon after off the defenders and way out of play. Ashlyn Trimble served up an Ace, and Johanna Ovsenek whapped the ball over, it popped off the block and down for another point, Kimmee Roleder launched a rocket of an attack in and a point later Dianis Mercado unleashed a smash. Elise Sage got in on the scoring with a whap, and Mercado used a lighter touch to send it over the QU front line. During this time QU had benefited from 3 SHU errors to give them their points. SHU Libero Jessica Colberg continued to serve as the run went on. Sage added another kill, the Pioneers picked up a block which the Bobcats could not return, and Roleder spiked the ball sending it bouncing off numerous defenders and out of play. Mercado thundered another attack across the line, and Sage got a running start on a kill of her own. Colberg served up an ace during her long run, and Sage lanced a cross court attack to the floor. A QU attack error resulted in the 17th point.

Programs from the first career home match and last career home match for Hartford's Seniors

WEST HARTFORD, CT- The Providence College Friars came down from scenic Rhode Island to take on the Hartford Hawks Friday night. For the U of H it was senior night, as the last home meet honored four seniors, Michelle Cordell, Danielle Etta, Lindsay Makowicki, and Sydney Scott who had all made numerous contributions to the team throughout their careers. Cordell and Etta are starters in the 2011 campaign but Makowicki and Scott got plenty of playing time in the past few years as well.

Once the ceremonies had passed it was time for business and the Hawks sent their seniors off with a 3 set win over the visiting Friars, 25-20, 25-22, and 25-21 for the sweep.

Women’s Volleyball: Hartford and CCSU go 5 sets.

By David F.P. [Modest Image Gallery]

NEW BRITAIN, CT- The Hartford Hawks and Central Connecticut State Blue Devils sit fairly close to each other separated only by a drive across a Hartford suburb creating a logical reason to face off often. On this evening Linda Sagnelli’s CCSU team would find Don Ferguson’s visiting squad taking them to five sets, after the Devils lead 2-0 to open things up. In the decisive fifth set Central would hold on to take the set and match in front of a pretty energetic crowd at Detrick Gym.
