Women’s Hockey: Sacred Heart 4, Wesleyan 2

By David F.P. [Modest Image Gallery]

BRIDGEPORT, CT- Friday night found the Wesleyan Cardinals down Route 15 at Wonderland of Ice to take on the Sacred Heart Pioneers. After 1 period the home team found themselves up 1-0 (thanks to Jamie Mey), but period 2 opened up with a pair of quick goals. 18 seconds after the puck dropped Mey knocked it past the keeper to put SHU up a quick 2-0. Just over a minute later Wesleyan’s Kelsey Muller got it past Sacred Heart’s tender at close range to cut the lead to 2-1. Much later in the second, Jordan Schildhaus of Wesleyan scored immediately after a face off in the Sacred Heart end to tie the game up, and both teams went into second intermission with the score 2-2.

Women’s Volleyball: Sacred Heart edges Long Island

by David F. P. [Modest Image Gallery]

FAIRFIELD, CT- Joined in progress would be the word to describe my visit to Sacred Heart as I arrived for their NEC battle with Long Island in the middle of Set 2. Kyle Robinson’s LIU Blackbirds had pulled out to a 1-0 set lead, but Rob Machan’s squad would even things up at 2 at the conclusion of the second frame.

Women’s Volleyball: Sacred Heart sweeps Quinnipiac

By David F.P. [Modest Image Gallery]

HAMDEN,CT- In a late regular season NEC match up, the Sacred Heart University Pioneers made the trip a few towns over to visit the Quinnipiac Bobcats at Kahn Court Friday Night. The result would be a 3 set win for the visitors

Set 1 opened with Sacred Heart pulling out a 17 to 3 lead, though there was good news for the Bobcats too in the set, though such a deficit put the Pioneers in a position to take the set. Offense for SHU in the set included an opening kill from Alissa Young, and another soon after off the defenders and way out of play. Ashlyn Trimble served up an Ace, and Johanna Ovsenek whapped the ball over, it popped off the block and down for another point, Kimmee Roleder launched a rocket of an attack in and a point later Dianis Mercado unleashed a smash. Elise Sage got in on the scoring with a whap, and Mercado used a lighter touch to send it over the QU front line. During this time QU had benefited from 3 SHU errors to give them their points. SHU Libero Jessica Colberg continued to serve as the run went on. Sage added another kill, the Pioneers picked up a block which the Bobcats could not return, and Roleder spiked the ball sending it bouncing off numerous defenders and out of play. Mercado thundered another attack across the line, and Sage got a running start on a kill of her own. Colberg served up an ace during her long run, and Sage lanced a cross court attack to the floor. A QU attack error resulted in the 17th point.

Women’s Volleyball: Marquette at Sacred Heart

By David F.P. [Modest Image Gallery]

FAIRFIELD, CT- The Sacred Heart Pioneers have played many a non conference foe this season, and in fact knocked off quite a few notably UConn, Maryland, Rutgers, Brown, and Yale on their way to an 11-4 record. The Marquette Golden Eagles swooped in from the Big East at the beginning of their east coast swing, but did not fall prey to the Pioneers this night despite the rowdy crowd SHU had assembled. Marquette picked up a relatively large first set win to go up 1-0 in the set. The Pioneers were by no means going to be swept however.

Women’s Volleyball: Bryant at Sacred Heart

By David F.P. [Modest Image Gallery]

FAIRFIELD,CT- the Sacred Heart Pioneers and Bryant Bulldogs went at it in a five set thriller Sunday afternoon at the Pitt Center. In a match which featured special theatrics due to a malfunctioning fire alarm for part of a set, SHU narrowly edged the visitors to pick up the 3-2 win.

Both teams reached out to a 7-7 tie in the first before Sacred Heart started to roll, Johanna Ovsenek had a kill just in bounds, though Bryant’s Kendall Gaffney responded, this did prevent two points coming from Kimmee Roleder, and a jumping kill from Ovsenek, as well as a double hit by Bryant to place the score at 12-8.
