Women’s Basketball: UConn wins, sets NCAA record of 71 straight wins.
HARTFORD, CT-It was a closer game than UConn is used to this season but the Huskies eventually pulled out to a lead on Notre Dame and didn’t look back to win their Big East semifinal game and set a new NCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball record by winning their 71st straight game. Due to it being a tournament game there was little room for celebration but the fans did cheer quite a lot as the team made their way off the court, and subsequently on their return later during the WVU/Rutgers game. It was bittersweet however as fans waited for news on Caroline Doty who had been laying motionless on the court with less than a minute to play and the game in hand. She eventually would stand up and be helped off the court, but for a few tense minutes, fans went between concern and also anger that a foul had not been called on Notre Dame.
The crowd could have been bigger but since it was a tournament game that did affect who had tickets to where, still the fans in attendance were loud and started getting into it especially once UConn settled in and took control. The first part of the game was far more nerve racking as the two teams fought it out and the Huskies missed a bunch of shots and gave up some turnovers. It wasn’t a big issue during the second half though and the fans were able to relax a bit and enjoy. There were many big plays though perhaps one of the most memorable was Kalana Greene falling back towards the floor and letting it go only to score the basket anyway.
UConn gets West Virginia tomorrow in the Big East Championship.
Women’s Basketball: West Virginia tops Rutgers, heads to Big East final.
HARTFORD, CT- Minutes before the number 1 ranked team in the country won their game and advanced to the Big East finals leaving Rutgers and West Virginia to battle for who would face them, and a battle it was with numerous fouls being amassed by both teams, though Rutgers had a run on them in the first half especially. WVU pulled out to several leads only to have Rutgers fight back, though the last lead proved to be insurmountable in the time available.

WEST HARTFORD, CT- As opponents go, the Hartford Hawks definitely had tough one in the Vermont Catamounts Thursday night. UVM was sitting with Stony Brook atop the America East and stood in the way of UHA breaking their losing streak in AE play. Unfortunately for the home team they would not overcome UVM and the visitors took the win 74-56. There was a bright spot for the Hawks as Morgan Sabia eclipsed the 1000 career point mark becoming the 23rd player in Hartford history to do so.
Men’s Basketball: CCSU gives them a hard game, but Robert Morris takes the win.
NEW BRITAIN, CT- The Robert Morris Colonials arrived in Detrick Gym 11-1 in the NEC to take on a Blue Devils team that was on a 4 game winning streak and had reached 6-6 in the all important conference standings. The hope for Central would be to upset RMU and capture an above five hundred record in conference, but the Colonials just did not let that happen. RMU’s Rob Robinson struck first but Central’s Devan Bailey matched that, and Markey’s Deans drained a 3. He later was fouled and hit a free throw to make it 6-2. RMU came back for 2, but Joe Seymore got on the board for CCSU. Robinson returned fire for the Colonials over the D, and it was 8-6, but Seymore then hit a three to the crowd’s delight as the Devils went up by 5.
Men’s Basketball: Maine tops Hartford 77-69 in 3 point filled game.
WEST HARTFORD, CT- Head Coach Ted Woodward led his Maine Black Bears into Chase Family Arena on the UHart campus, looking to continue the team’s winning streak at the expense of Dan Leibovitz’s Hartford Hawks. His team would succeed by narrowly despite what the final score reported. The game would be a shootout with each side sending their 3 point shooters into the fray and it at times three point shots were all that were being taken.
