BRIDGEPORT, CT- Friday night found the Wesleyan Cardinals down Route 15 at Wonderland of Ice to take on the Sacred Heart Pioneers. After 1 period the home team found themselves up 1-0 (thanks to Jamie Mey), but period 2 opened up with a pair of quick goals. 18 seconds after the puck dropped Mey knocked it past the keeper to put SHU up a quick 2-0. Just over a minute later Wesleyan’s Kelsey Muller got it past Sacred Heart’s tender at close range to cut the lead to 2-1. Much later in the second, Jordan Schildhaus of Wesleyan scored immediately after a face off in the Sacred Heart end to tie the game up, and both teams went into second intermission with the score 2-2.

In the third following a Wesleyan penalty, which was heavily disputed by the the Cardinals coach, Sacred Heart’s Catie Ladner put one into the net to take the lead with the power play goal. The Pioneers would not have to rely on that goal however as Caitlin Gottwald swept in on net and netted it 3 minutes later. That would be it for scoring, and Sacred Heart took the game 4-2. Wesleyan drops to 2-5 and Sacred Heart is up to 2-9.

Alexius Schutt was in goal for the Pioneers and faced 33 and saved 31. For Wesleyan, Ashleigh Corvi faced 27 and saved 23. This was also a game filled with penalties. In the first period there were 5, in period 2 there were 6 including a four on four section. The only penalty of period 3 was the 5:17 penalty that led to the power play goal. Sacred Heart’s Maura Leahy, Sara Hanna, Sarah Delaney, Alanna Woodford, and Gottwald all had assists on the day. Wesleyan’s Sydney Morgan, Becca Koppel, and Cara Jankowski had assists on the day as well.
