STORRS, CT- In last year’s finale of the UConn Toyota Classic, UConn and TCU went to five sets and then some before the Horned Frogs put the Huskies away. This year the visiting SIU Salukis would take the win over the Huskies in three straight sets to win the Classic title and finish the tournament not having lost one set.

As always with recaps I tend to focus on the offensive, as it is hard enough to follow the fast paced action, but this is not to in any way downgrade the importance of key sets and key defensive plays. I do note defensive saves whenever I have time to write them down.

STORRS, CT- In their last matches of the Toyota Classic, Hartford took on Brown. With both teams without a win so far, one was guaranteed a victory on their way out the door. The win would go to Brown as the Bears picked up a three set victory, though Hartford gave them a very tough match.

Set 1 would be the first of the tournament to go beyond 25 points as the two teams kept within 2 of each other in the closing rallies. Eventually the score would reach 27-27 before Brown picked up two quick points for the 29-27 set win.

STORRS, CT- In the second match of the early action at the UConn Toyota Classic, UConn took on Brown and prevailed with a three straight set victory.

As always with recaps I tend to focus on the offensive, as it is hard enough to follow the fast paced action, but this is not to in any way downgrade the importance of key sets and key defensive plays. I do note defensive saves whenever I have time to write them down.

Set 1 was a battle royale as the two teams volleyed to an 18-18 tie before UConn took a slight lead and held I. Connecticut highlights included a Jordan Kirk spike to start off the scoring. Later on Cayla Broadwater hit the ball over and the defense could not return it. Rebecca Murray sent a blast into a gap in the defensive setup. Morgan Freeman and Allison Nickel shared a block soon afterward. Later in the game libero Kelsey Maving came up with one of her many defensive saves and went way out of bounds to make it, and a UConn point would eventually result. Much later in the set Mattison Quayle and Freeman shared a block as well. The two shared a block again sometime after, and sandwiched in between as a Murray ace. Soon afterward Kirk dropped the hammer on a spike.

STORRS, CT- In the early match of day 2 of the UConn Toyota Classic, SIU took on Hartford. Southern Illinois pulled out to a 25-15.

As always with recaps I tend to focus on the offensive, as it is hard enough to follow the fast paced action, but this is not to in any way downgrade the importance of key sets and key defensive plays. I do note defensive saves whenever I have time to write them down.

The Saluki’s pulled out to a big lead and held it in set 2 as well, picking up the 25-13 victory to give them a 2 sets to zero lead. Highlights for SIU included a block from Sydney Clark and Alysia Mayes, followed by a big time kill from Alicia Johnson. Clark found a gap to hammer the ball into. Jennifer Berwanger knocked a kill off the defenders and out of bounds. During a long serving streak, Johnson also picked up an ace just in bounds and Jasmine Conner and Rachael Brown teamed up on the block. Berwanger added a big kill soon afterward, and later on added a service ace. It would be long before they were wrapping up the set with another Berwanger rocket.

STORRS, CT- In the nightcap of Friday night action, the University of Hartford Hawks took on the University of Connecticut Huskies.

Set 1 turned out to be a very close affair with the Huskies eventually edging the visitors 25-23. Hartford pulled out to a 10-7 lead, but the Huskies eventually fought back to a 14-14 tie and the two sides continued trading points.

As always with recaps I tend to focus on the offensive, as it is hard enough to follow the fast paced action, but this is not to in any way downgrade the importance of key sets and key defensive plays. I do note defensive saves whenever I have time to write them down.
