UConn Club Meet Results vs. Boston University

by David F.P.

STORRS, CT- A little while ago Boston University and its longstanding club team took on the UConn Huskies and their relatively new team at a UConn home meet. The results for the Huskies are here and I will try to track down the BU results as well. Despite not having varsity status these two teams are one of many clubs throughout the country who keep gymnastics alive on their campuses. Also you may notice some of the start values are close to that of varsity competitors.

The number on the left is start value, on the right is the competition score. For vault, just the score is listed. An Asterix means the score was counted.

New England/New Jersey Schedule Anomalies prior to the season.

by David F.P.

With the season just a few weeks away there are some scheduling anomalies out there.

University of Bridgeport:

According to the schedule on their website, the Purple Knights will be at New Hampshire on January 17th, however, UNH’s online and printed schedules only have Utah State, Ball State, and Yale attending and that would make sense given the UNH Invitational is a quad meet.

Also on their website, the schedule indicates Bridgeport will be at UNH on January 30th, though UNH’s schedules do not indicate that either. Furthermore the schedule indicates on January 30th as well, Bridgeport will be at Brown, Brown’s schedule indicates Bridgeport will be in town on January 31st. Additionally, UB’s schedule indicates TWU will be at Brown, this is not the case as TWU will be hosting their own meet at the time.

Additionally, Brown’s schedule indicates UB will be there February 14th, but UB’s schedule does not.

Brown University:

Brown and Springfield’s schedule says that they will be at SCSU with Towson and Springfield, but Towson is not going to be their according to their schedule, and so does SCSU.

Additionally, Brown indicates that Bridgeport will be there February 14th, but UB’s schedule does not indicate this.

Springfield

Springfield’s schedule indicates Towson will be at SCSU January 16th, that will not be the case.

An additional oddity is that SC’s schedule says that SCSU will be there February 21st at 5pm, but SCSU’s schedule says she’ll be there at 1pm.

Southern Connecticut

An additional oddity is that SC’s schedule says that SCSU will be there February 21st at 5pm, but SCSU’s schedule says she’ll be there at 1pm.

DURHAM, NH- The University of New Hampshire Wildcats held their Meet the Team Intrasquad on Saturday afternoon in front of a relatively large crowd of fans including young gymnasts set to participate in a clinic afterward. Head Coach Gail Goodspeed and the new meet announcer shared emceeing duties throughout the afternoon as the the UNH squad was divided up into two teams to showcase their routines in a light hearted competition between blue and white. One team was coached by Assistant Head Coach Ed Datti, and the other by Assistant Coach Lindsay Bruck.

The judges for each event consisted of UNH officials, former gymnasts, and other student athletes. Unlike in competition the judging was done through two gymnasts doing their routine and the judges would pick which routine they felt was better. During a deadlock the crowd would then be asked for their opinion as well via the cards issued to them by the gymnasts prior to the meet. The gymnast with the most support earned a point for their team. The meet proceeded with one gymnast from each team on Bars, then Beam, Floor, and Vault, until the very end when the rotation changed slightly. In the end it wasn’t really important which team won, but the fans certainly got to see a show as well as get a peek at where UNH stands this year.

WORCESTER, MA-Just 10 years ago a fire at the Worcester Cold Storage Warehouse 6 firefighters lost their lives when they entered an inferno to try to save the lives of two homeless people who had been reported to be inside. The Worcester Sharks dedicated the day’s events to honoring their memory and raising funds for charity including a hockey game between the Providence and Worcester Fire Departments as well as raising a banner to the rafters of the DCU center bearing a Worcester 6 logo. The Sharks themselves took to the ice in special red, black, and white uniforms bearing the Worcester 6 logo instead of the traditional teal based outfits they wore. The pre-game ceremony also honored the men and recognized their families before the banner was raised.
