Both of MIT's Gymnastics Teams to be cut
CAMBRIDGE, MA- MIT Athletics announced that both gymnastics programs will be cut as part of cost saving measures. If these cuts go through it will mean the destruction of two more gymnastics programs in the Northeast region, following cuts that have been continuing through the past few years. It also comes following several years of the team winning numerous awards.
Georgetown at Connecticut Baseball April 18th, 2009
STORRS, CT- The Hoyas of Georgetown took on the Connecticut Huskies in game 2 of a three game series. Admittedly by the time I got to J.O. Christian Field in Storrs, the 1st inning was wrapping up with each team having one run on the board. Elliot Glynn was on the Mound for Connecticut in the top of the 2nd, and he didn’t have much trouble in that inning. For Georgetown Will Harris was on the mound and he got a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd. In the top of the third Glynn picked up two strike outs and got a Hoya to fly out to center in between for a simple inning. In the bottom half, Connecticut shortstop Nick Ahmed singled to left, and then stole 2nd two batters later. When the batter grounded to 2nd he advanced to third. He’d be stranded when the next batter hit to the 2nd baseman though. In the top of the 4th Georgetown’s Erick Fernandez hit a blooper over 2nd base to get onto 1st. Sean Lamont then knocked a foul pop towards the wall, but Huskies 1st baseman Mike Nemeth dived to the dirt to catch it. Georgetown’s Sean Baumann got to first on a fielder’s choice and stole 2nd base, but a teammate struck out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 4th, Nemeth got a single to right field, but was the lone hit for the Huskies. The top of the 5th came and went 1-2-3 as well. In the bottom half, Pierre LePage of U of C beat out a throw to 1st when he hit a grounded to 3rd. Ahmed got to 1st on a fielders choice when grounded to the pitcher. He then ran on a pitch to Dale Brannon preventing a double play when Brannon grounded to the pitcher. He was thrown out but Ahmed made it to second. This prompted a visit to the mound by one of the Georgetown Coaches, but no change was made. Matt Burnett came up to bat and was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch to George Springer advanced both Ahmed and Burnett, Four straight balls put Springer on base as well. Peter Fatse stepped in and with the count 0-2 was hit by a pitch to score Ahmed. Nemeth then blew the game open with a single to the right field scoring two more Huskies. Dough Elliot then singled as well to bring in another run. A wild pitch moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd but a strike out would end the damage, Georgetown 1, Connecticut 5 at the end of 5.
It was another 1-2-3 inning for Gylnn in the top of the six. In the bottom LePage made it first when the third baseman mishandled a ground ball. LePage ran on a pitch that Ahmed hit and prevented a double play, but Ahmed was forced out at 1st. A single to right by Brannon scored LePage, and Burnett added a single of his own. With that there was a pitching change and Pablo Vinent came in, but a wild pitch moved both runners a base ahead. He then walked Springer and the bases were loaded. Vinent got the next batter swinging, but Nemeth sent a ball into the right field corner for a double, scoring the other 3 runners. Vinent struck out the next batter to get out of the inning. It was now 9 to 1 Connecticut
In the top of the 7th, Glynn got into a bit of trouble following a strike out to start the inning, Baumann singled to left, and Dan Capeless walked, but a strikeout of the following batter and a grounder to 2nd ended the danger. After the first batter grounded out in the bottom, LePage beat out a throw when he hit a deep grounded to short. The next batter flied out, but Brannon made it to base when his fly ball to left field was dropped. This led to a ptiching change and Dan Godefroi came in for the Hoyas. He got Burnett swinging to end the inning. Three straight singles opened the top of the 8th which led to a run. Glynn was relieved after 7 innings by Scott Oberg. The next batter hit to third base, and Connecticut’s third basemen took it and tagged out the lead runner. A fly out and a pop up followed and Georgetown was left still down by 7.
In the bottom half two fly outs and a hit batsmen led to Billy Concannon coming in in relief, he gave up two straight singles the second to John Andreoli, to score a 10th Connecticut run. A lineout by the next batter closed the inning.
Matt Barnes came in to pitch the ninth fo rthe huskies, and got the first batter to ground out, struck out the second with a full count, and struck out a pinch hitter to end the inning and the game.
Nationals Weekend

Twelve teams are headed to Lincoln, Nebraska for NCAA Nationals to determine who will be the champions this year in the team and event finals.
And even as that occurs, a large amount of teams are also headed to nationals, club nationals in Atlanta, Georgia. For schools without varsity teams (and even some with them), club gymnastics keeps the sport alive, and this weekend those teams come together to determine their own champions.

Articles and rumblings are indicating that MIT is considering cutting several athletics programs. Some discussion has indicated the Men’s Gymnastics team is possibly on the cutting block, though not as much is pointing at the women’s team, though no announcement of which teams has been made. Students at MIT have taken to Facebook and other means in order to protest these potential cuts which could affect several teams throughout the spectrum. If the Men’s team was cut it would decrease the already small number of Men’s Programs in the country, and cut the number of teams in New England in half.

NEW HAVEN, CT- USAG Collegiate Gymnastics Nationals, the unique and lesser known of the three gymnastics championships was held for three days at Southern Connecticut State University this past week. What resulted was a lot of exciting gymnastics, drama, and surprises.
