Sacred Heart at Central Connecticut Volleyball Mini-Report

(I unfortunately do not have the time to write up a full play by play report right now due to the timing of the match so here’s a brief summary.)
Sacred Heart pulled out to a 2-0 set lead though Set 1 came easier for them then Set 2. Central battled back to win Set 3, and also pulled themselves out of a deficit to keep even in Set 4, only to have the set and match win slip out of their hands narrowly. Sacred Heart wins the match 3-1, but it was far closer than the score stated. I haven’t looked over all the scoring yet, but the usual Central players scored well including Amanda Olmstead, Jamie Baumert, Amanda Bayer, and Lauren Snyder. Libero Kaitlin Petrella had a variety of key defensive plays as did Danielle Gasser. It was Gasser who had perhaps the highlight of the game when she lined up for a set at midcourt then at the last minute faked it sending the ball over the net to a gap in the Sacred Heart defense causing the crowd to whoot at the deception.
For Sacred Heart Maile Hetherington was blasting spikes all over the place, Brittany Best, Ashlyn Trimble, and Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek were also scoring and Libero Jessica Colberg picked up a variety of key saves of her own. This is an oversimplification of a hard fought match and I will be providing updates this weekend.
Rutgers and Connecticut face off in a Big East Volleyball Clash

By David F.P. 10-12-08
The Scarlet Knights from Rutgers made their way up to Storrs to take on the awaiting Huskies in Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies were more than happy to welcome them and set 1 started simply enough with a Chauntay Mickens blast off the touch for a U of C point, but following a good dig by Jamie Godfrey, Victoria Thomas sent the ball flying off the Connecticut defense. Megan Frey responded for Connecticut with a tap over the Rutgers front line, but a serve into the net evened things. Connecticut attacker, Lauren Lamberti’s spike popped off the blockers for Connecticut’s third point, and Jordan Kirk followed up for the Huskies with a blast just in bounds. Following a good dig by Frey, and Libero Jessica Isaac during a long rally the Scarlet Knights were able to score off a Katie Barends tip over the net, to make the score 4-3. On the ensuing rally the home team’s Rebecca Murray accepted a teammate’s set and banged it home.
The Great Danes of Albany visit the Hawks of Hartford for a volleyball showdown.

By David F.P. 10-12-08
The two America East opponents faced off in what would prove to be another hard fought contest. The home Hawks opened up to 7-3 lead thanks Hallie Fullagar’s smash, Erin Macro spiking off the block, another kill from Macro, followed by another, and then her block. She then combined with Makowicki on another block, and Hartford would tap the ball over for their 7th point. Albany managed a spike from Cate Eckhardt and Amanda Cowdrey as well as point off a Hartford error. On the next play though the Danes began a comeback. Both Macro and Teresa Coppiellie had great defensive saves, but Kellam came up with a block, and then unloaded a blast despite a great save by Makowicki earlier on the rally. She scored again when Hartford passed the ball over the net while trying to set it up. The ball sailed to her and she blasted the overpass back. Following a good dig by Abbey Wexel, Cowdrey delivered kill, and a Hawks two contact error put the visitors in the lead 7-8. Makowicki responded with a big smash to tie it back up, but Cowdrey spiked off the defense and way out of bounds to regain the lead. A U of H attack out of bounds extended the lead, but two the two teams then traded errors to bring the score to 9-11.
