USF at UConn Football 10-27-07

I didn’t follow this game with play by play, but did go to take in the atmosphere. After UConn knocked off Louisville in the rain at Rentschler Field it gave signs of hope following a narrow loss to Virginia.  South Florida had fallen from its number 2 ranking following a loss to Rutgers, but spirits were high.  It was a bit chilly, but not too cold as rained poured down on the tailgaters and fans streaming into “the Rent”.

In the first half the rain was a mix of pouring to downright typhoon conditions, but that was fine for the Huskies as they took full advantage. USF, a very good team, seemed to be struggling not only with the conditions but with the UConn defense. The irony was that South Florida’s QB seemed to be far more effective running the ball himself then passing it. UConn also gave up a lot of ground until USF made it into the red zone and then put up some huge stops.  USF missing a close field goal during their first drive of the game helped get the fans into it as well. It was just a wild game. While USF mounted a comeback in the second half, Connecticut pulled off the win building off the momentum of the first half. I’m by no means a football expert, but UConn’s defense is solid, and the running game can burn a team whether Dixon or Brown is in.  UConn QB Tyler Lorenzen passes well, but he also can run when he needs to and he does.

I’ve actually written this on November 8th, after UConn also knocked off Rutgers and on the eve of the Cincinnati game. It will be interesting to see just where the Huskies can go from here.
